Original Item: One of a Kind. This is an absulately wonderful early U.S. priming powder horn. Company director Christian Cranmer truly believes this to absolutely genuine and of the period. It is one of the most unusual large horns we have ever seen and came from a private collection on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It measures about 18"-20" overall and has very pronounced curves.

The large end has a sheet iron cover with an eye to take a body strap. Part of this cover is so old it has broken away, something impossible to duplicate. About midway down the horn there is another sheet iron band 2 1/2" wide with a raised opening, presumably to hold a plug through which the very fine priming powder can be loaded into the horn. The most interesting thing is that the horn does NOT have a loading spout on the sharp end, but instead 5" before reaching the tip there is 1/4" opening on the horn's underside, which clearly once had some sort of wood plug as well. This presumably is where the priming powder was poured from into the rear of the Cannon's ignition system. We've never seen anything like it before. Plainly old and plainly very right. Note neither of the plugs are now present.

Now the Scrimshaw work features several different scenes not connected to each other on the horn. The largest features a 3 1/2" rendering of "Liberty" to the left of a Naval Fouled Anchor to the center and a rendering of "Justice" on the right hand side. This panel measures about 5" X 4". The second panel measuring 4" X 3 1/2" shows a Naval Seaman carrying the Stars and Stripes between two Canonade style Naval Cannons over "Sailor's Right" in scroll. The third rendering is of a dancing "TAR" in his sailor suit entitled "The Jig" There is a small rendering of three stars over laurel leaves.

This really is a fabulous Gunner's Horn. From a difficult time in United States history when SAILOR'S RIGHTS were a very big issue not only in America but in Great Britain and Europe also. Ready to Display with pride!
